Calm Waters lI
15” x 8.5”
While snorkeling in the red sea I became fascinated with the magnificent coral reefs and sought out resources for locating ethically sourced coral from around the world in order to share the beauty of nature I experienced in my travels. This ceramic work tells it's story through earth elements, using porcelain clay, sculpted sea coral, and horsehair impressions.
Raku firing is a very exciting process whereby pottery is removed from the kiln while at very high heat. I use a Raku style firing process by removing my pottery from the kiln at 1000 degrees. The horsehair is applied to the surface and burns away, leaving a black carbon imprint. Horsehair pottery is an artform of creating unique one of a kind designs that cannot be replicated.
